Arnica Extract beskrivning

Arnica extract comes from a plant known taxonomically as _Arnica montana_ that is native to parts of Europe. A member of the daisy family, it has long been used as an herbal treatment, both ingested and applied topically. Like many other extracts derived from plant sources, arnica has antioxidant properties and some soothing benefits. It also serves as an antimicrobial agent. Much has been made of arnica’s ability to help lessen the appearance of bruising, as it is included in some over the counter bruise creams and touted as an herbal remedy. While there are some indications it could help, a 2025 study found that the reduction in bruising was only observed in arnica used in amounts of 20% or higher, and that more study is needed on the safety profile of arnica in amounts this high applied to skin. Arnica extract also has the potential to irritate skin, especially skin that is abraded (which in some cases goes hand in hand with bruising), thanks to a compound it contains called helenalin. The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review adds that there is not enough evidence available yet to declare arnica extract safe in its current usage. Given the lack of data surrounding its efficacy and safety, we recommend steering clear of arnica extract, or at the very least limiting its use and avoid applying to large areas of skin.
