Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine) Leaf Oil description

_Citrus reticulata_ (tangerine) leaf oil is an ingredient extracted from the leaves of the tangerine fruit, not to be confused with the Mandarin orange (which is also referred to as _Citrus reticulata_). Tangerines are considered a variety of Mandarin orange, which can add to confusion. While not a widely used ingredient in skincare, this oil is primarily a fragrance ingredient but is sometimes included in formulas for its skin conditioning and anti-aging properties. Studies demonstrate that tangerine leaf oil does have antioxidant benefits and even some hydrating properties, but not all the news is good. This oil is still a volatile one, meaning in certain amounts it can be irritating. The independent Cosmetic Ingredient Review found that it was not irritating in amounts of up to 0.1%, which is also the maximum concentration of use it found in its survey of cosmetics at the time of its review. Pure tangerine essential oil, however, should never be used on skin because in higher amounts research shows it can be cytotoxic, meaning it kills healthy skin cells. It’s best to stick to other, non-irritating oils such as grape or jojoba seed oil instead of opting for this one.
